Hardanger Light

Explore Hardanger

Welcome to one of our favourite hikes in the Hardanger region, just a short drive from Voss centre. It is the perfect half day or full day trip for families and all adults alike. Walk through classic western Norway landscapes, going only where the locals go, seeing the classic Norwegian “Hytte”. Drink water directly from the springs off the mountain side, and become acquainted with the local sheep roaming the mountain.

The trip

We typically start the day meeting, 09.15 am, at “Vossabakst”, a local bakery, where you can buy a coffee and sandwich before the trip. We check the everybody has the gear they need, as Norway is well known to have 4 seasons in a-day, yes even in July!

Most of our clients come on the 07.57 Bergen train to Voss, arriving at 09.04 in Voss. We leave Voss sentrum around 09.25, drive for about 30-35 mins to the starting point of the hike. Here you will experience being in the mountains at once, a sense of quietness, and nature taking over. We will tell you about the area, especially Hardanger and what its known for, why Norwegians have such a love for “Friluftsliv”, and what it means. We also like to talk about what nature gives us, and why the “flow state” also implies to hiking. But more importantly we will get to know you for the short time we are together!

After 30-40 mins of hiking we will come to the støl, here we will take in the view and the landscapes, talk a little about a “støl” and why Norwegians have great pride in their “støls”. Continuing on we come to our first main view, the bench spot, here we will really get our first sighting of Hardangerfjord and its surroundings. Pointing out some of the other hiking trips we do in the area. For our half-day trip this will be our lunch spot, while our full-day trip continues on.

“Click-click-click” you might hear randomly throughout the trip, dont be afraid, just smile. Its just us occasionally running head, composing a photo, making a memory for you to bring back to your home land.

Our full-day trip usually continues on, following the trail as it winds through the mountains, meeting waterfalls, a great photo spot or a great spot to fill your water bottle. We will pass by “Brennevinsteinen” give you a little story behind the stone, oh we cant tell you everything here! We continue winding around the mountain, gaining some altitude and eventually coming to our lunch spot looking up and down Hardangerfjord. As we sit down for lunch, we get out our primus and coffee making utensils, also our famous homemade waffle batter and begin making the mountains smell of Norwegian waffles. This is surely a high point for most of our clients, reasons some book on our trip, but also satisfying their bellies after a great hike.

After lunch, we pack up and head back. Enjoying the scenery and we follow the trail winding through western Norways beautiful landscape.
